2 Colors to Incorporate into your custom home

Nichole Garner: Trinity Building Systems, Head Designer

Let’s face it- designing a home can be stressful! There is so much pressure to get everything just right, and sometimes that fear can be paralyzing. The one thing I hear over and over again from my clients is that they are afraid to incorporate color into their home design.
I’ve heard it all- “What if I get tired of it?” And “What if I want to sell the house one day? Won’t it be easier to sell if we stick with neutrals?” The truth is, my job is to give you a home you LOVE. It’s not supposed to appeal to the masses. A home should bring you joy, peace, and inspiration. In short, I want to give you a home that you will never want to leave.

So what is the best way to create a home that is both colorful and timeless? I absolutely love a method called color drenching, and two colors that I would really love to see incorporated more often in 2025 are plum and yellow. For those that love a moodier vibe, plum is a fabulous new take on classic sophisticated styles. It pairs beautifully with black and natural wood, creating a dreamy atmosphere in any room of the house. Layer your room with texture – Venetian plaster on the walls, shiny subway tile, leathered countertops with a chiseled edge, a pop of brass on the cabinet pulls and the pendant lights… Pair these finishes with soft fabrics and you can’t go wrong!

If cheerful, invigorating colors are more your style, don’t be afraid of yellow! It’s all about finding the right shade. The mistake most people make with it is that they don’t lean into color drenching enough- instead they opt for a pop of color, which can make a room feel a little disjointed. For example – start with a pale shade of yellow kitchen cabinets, then pair it with a quartz countertop with warm-toned veins running through it. Choose a white tile backsplash that has a warmer, more yellow undertone, rather than a blue undertone. And don’t shy away from a cool wallpaper! Some of the most beautiful wallpaper I have ever seen is yellow floral prints.

In short, your home can be moody, light and bright, traditional, modern or countless other styles. As long as it is a space you can’t wait to come home to every day, you can’t go wrong!
